TOP AWARD FOR FAST-GROWING TRI CLUB: One of the North-East’s fastest-growing triathlon clubs has qualified for a coveted Starmark award.

Darlington Triathlon Club, which celebrates its second birthday next month, has become the biggest development club in the region and now boasts 70 members.
Two of its members have qualified for this year’s World Championships and on Sunday July 25 the club will stage its first race in the shape of the revived Teesdale Triathlon. Starmark is a quality approval scheme operated by the British Triathlon Federation and is bestowed on clubs who have proved they are delivering in all key areas, such as membership, coaching, development and competitions.
The certificate was awarded to members earlier this week by Regional Programme Manager Georgie Rutherford, who congratulated the club on its impressive progress since launching in July 2008. Darlington Tri’s success is built on a strong coaching structure that encourages beginners to try the sport and also supports experienced triathletes. The club has seven qualified coaches and attracts members from all the over the Tees Valley, North Yorkshire and County Durham.
“Darlington Tri has been a breath of fresh air, attracting dozens of new recruits to the sport of all ages and training backgrounds,” says Ms Rutherford.
“It is just what Darlington has needed for so many years and shows what a strong market there is for a gateway club that introduces people to triathlon. This award is richly deserved.”
The club, which was launched with the help of a community grant from Darlington Council, has long-term ambitions to start a junior section to encourage the next generation of triathletes.
Entries for the Teesdale Triathlon, from Teesdale Leisure Centre, Barnard Castle, are fast approaching 90 – but there is still time to take part in the event, which features a 400m pool swim, 28k bike leg and 5k run.
