26/03/2007 - Stokesley Duathlon


The 2007 North-East multi-sport season got under way last Sunday with the gruelling Stokesley Duathlon, a continuous 5kms run – 30kms bike – 5kms run test of endurance along the country lanes around Stokesley and Hutton Rudby. This event has been missing from the calendar for a couple of years but it’s popularity with the north-east’s duathletes was confirmed with an entry list of over 200 competitors.

The race, which also featured the National Police Championships, got under way at 10.00am from the market place in Stokesley and first man back from the fairly flat first run was local man Nathaniel Williams, currently studying at Loughborough University. Following Williams was a group including Gary Grounds of Cleveland Biketraks Tri Club, Colin Robson of NE31 Tri Club, Will Kaye of York club White Rose Triathletes and Matt Higson, the leading police competitor from Lothian and Borders Police.

In the ladies race unattached Kristina Slater led the way in 23.34 closely followed by Marie Stansmore (23.41) also unattached, Wendy Barnes of Wakefield Tri/Derbyshire Police (23.47) and Donna Edmondson of Leeds and Bradford Tri Club (24.12).

The bike route features two laps from Stokesley to Hutton Rudby and the A172 back to Stokesley which is fairly flat and fast and this is where the specialist cyclists made inroads into Williams’ lead. Robson lead into the bike/run transition by 1 second from Williams with Wayne Boyes making up a lot of time to go into third spot a further 18 seconds back.


Although Slater’s bike time was only third fastest she was still in the lead in the ladies race after the bike but only by seven seconds from Barnes with Caroline Graham-Brown of Army Tri recording the fastest ladies bike split of 59.58 which took her into third place. Stansmore recorded the fastest second run amongst the ladies but had lost too much time on the bike and finished back in 8th place. Slater extended her lead to 1.35 over Barnes in second to come home a comfortable winner although Barnes was a clear winner in the National Police Championships. Graham-Brown lost time on the run but still had a margin of 19 seconds over Edmondson who came in fourth. First veteran home was Hilary Ross of Durham Tri Club.

Back in the men’s race Williams passed Robson during the transition from bike to run and never looked back, recording the day’s fastest second run of 20.04 to come home an easy winner in 1.33.40, 1.24 ahead of Grounds with Higson pipping Robson by 1 second to clinch third. Higson also had the consolation of becoming the National Police Duathlon Champion for 2007. Andy Hardy of hartlepooltriathletes.com was the first veteran home in 1.36.58.

The Stokesley Duathlon is the first in a three-race series comprising the North-East Duathlon Grand Prix. The other two events are the City of Durham Duathlon on 15 April and the Hamsterley Forest Duathlon on 6 May.
