20/04/2008 - Maughan and Ross win at Meadowfield

The annual City of Durham Duathlon, a race over 3 miles run – 16 miles bike - 3 miles run, took place at Meadowfield Sports Centre on Sunday 20 April. The usual weather for 2008, cold, blustery winds, greeted the competitors for the 9:30am start but at least it was dry.

Both runs are cross-country races and the ground was very wet from the rain during the preceeding week. Gary Grounds (hartlepooltriathletes.com) and Chris Graham (Alnwick Tri Club) led the field into the first transition with first runs of 18:06. They were followed by veteran Chris Morley of NE31 Tri Club in 18:17. Vanessa Butler of Ryton Tri Club was the first lady back in 20:04, followed by veteran Hilary Ross (Durham Tri Club) and Paula Brennan (Morpeth Harriers) in 22:30 and 23:18 respectively.

The bike course climbs steadily during the first part of the race and then at half-way there is the infamous Crook Bank out of Waterhouses, a mile-long affair with some sections at 1 in 9. This is where the bike specialists come into their own and Haydn Maughan of Ryton Tri Club put in the fastest bike leg of 40:56 to move into the lead. Next fastest were Nicky McGee of East Coast Tri Club in 43:30 and Nigel Baxter (Unattached) in 43:59.

In the ladies race Butler suffered on the hills and fell right back. Ross returned a time of 52:00 to move into a commanding lead and fellow veterans Jenny Holland (Tyne Tri Club) and Diane Chaney (Ryton Tri Club) were next fastest with times of 55:09 and 56:25 respectively.

Maughan started the 2nd run with an impressive lead of 2:32 over Grounds and increased this to 3:19 by the finish with a run of 19:26 to take a well-earned victory. Grounds held on to 2nd with McGee in third. In the ladies race Ross took a lead of 6:35 over Holland into the second run, a lead which she extended to 7:06 at the finish with the fastest 2nd run of 23:51. Holland was a clear second with Brennan a close third just ahead of a resurgent Butler.
