30/11/2008 - 2009 Events
The triathlon calendar in the North of England promises to be the best ever in 2009. There is something for you nearly every weekend from March through to November in the north-east and adjoining regions and even more than one event on some weekends!
All of the usual suspects are there and there are several new events (some of these are in adjoining regions but do not clash with north-east events) -
The Wansbeck Triathlon
at the Queen Elizabeth II Country Park, Ashington, Northumberland is organised by Tyne Triathlon Club and will take place on 7 June. It’s a sprint distance event over 750m swim (lake), 20k bike and 5k run with a two-wave start and electronic timing. Maximum number of competitors – 200. See the event page on Tyne Tri Club’s website at http://www.tynetri.org/QE2009.htm for full details including maps of the courses.
The Cleveland Short Course
is as usual at the Ellerton Lake near Scorton on 14 June. What’s new about that I hear you say? Well this year for the first time it’s a full standard distance (1500m (lake) swim / 40k bike / 10k run) triathlon and promises to be a very popular event. Maximum number of competitors – 200. See the event page on the Trihard website at Cleveland Short Course.
The Northumberland Triathlon Festival Standard Distance Race
on 21 June is not a new event but next year it is the National Championship event and is certain to be over-subscribed. This is because all of this year’s entrants are guaranteed entry due to the unfortunate events that led to the cancellation of that race in September. If you want to do this race don’t delay. See the event page also on the Trihard website at One Life Triathlon.
“A Day In The Lakes”
is new event based at Park Foot near Pooley Bridge on Lake Ullswater and is over the half-ironman distance of 1.2ml swim / 56ml bike / 13.1ml run. For some strange reason this distance is known as “middle” distance! This is part of the ever-expanding Trihard portfolio of events and is sure to attract a large contingent of diehard “hard men and women” who take the likes of the Helvellyn Triathlon in their stride. This event too will probably be over-subscribed (the Keswick Triathlon is already full!) so don’t delay with your entry. See the Trihard website at A Day in the Lakes and for a flavour of the area go to http://www.parkfootullswater.co.uk/.
The Prince Bishops Standard Distance Triathlon
on 26 July now has a little sister! On the preceeding day (25 July) a Sprint Distance triathlon is being held at the same venue, Derwent Reservoir. Full details are not yet ready but will posted on this website as soon as they are.
The Lakeland Standard Distance Triathlon
On 15 August there is a new event at Bassenthwaite Lake in Cumbria. A collaboration between Trihard Events and Tri-Lakeland Triathlon Club, it will be based at the Bassenthwaite Sailing Club which has all the excellent facilities associated with such a venue. This is a beautiful venue over a not-very-lumpy course and will also be a very popular event. See the event page on the Trihard website at Lakeland Standard Distance Triathlon.
The Golden Leaves Duathlon
on 1 November is based in Hamsterley Forest and is over the same distances as the Hamsterley Forest Spring Duathlon (on 3 May) but not over the same course. The date of the event is timed to take place at the best weekend for the amazing autumn colours in the forest and both 5k runs will be over different routes that will show off the colours to their best advantage. The bike route will be slightly different but will still take in the villages of Woodland and Hamsterley. Full entry details are not yet ready but will be posted on this website and the Trihard website as soon as they are.
Next year also sees an expansion of a new dimension in multisport events. The MTB triathlon. Three events are already scheduled to take place at Ampleforth (11 April), Coniston (7 July) and Kielder (23 August) with an MTB duathlon at Dalby Forest on 11 October. This may well be a sign of the future in this part of the world if our relations with the police don’t improve. You can find details of these events at http://www.ukmtbtri.co.uk/ and entry is via the Trihard website at Events Entry Page.
An MTB triathlon is also in the planning stages for the Seaham area with the swim taking place in Seaham Harbour! Watch this space.

Remember that this website is only as accurate as the information it receives. If you know of any additional events to those listed above we will be happy to give them publicity on these pages as long as they are registered with Triathlon England and if they are in adjoining regions they must not clash with any of our events.
