North East Triathletes have been competing all over the UK and around the world recently and here we have been tracking their progress:
European Duathlon Championships 23/05/09
Barry Jameson had an outstanding race in becoming the 2009 European Duathlon Champion in the 55-59yrs age group in Budapest. The One Life Racing athlete clocked 2.01.25 to win by almost three minutes. Team-mates James Dickinson was 5th in the 50-54yrs age group in 2.08.58 whilst Sally Dickinson in the women's 40-44yrs age group just missed out on a medal, finishing 4th in 2.17.29.
Ironman Lanzarote 23/05/09
Arguably the toughest Ironman event on the planet, Ironman Lanzarote continues to be the challenge of choice for most triathletes. Taking place in sweltering heat, running through lava fields and battling exceptionally strong headwinds on the bike its clear to see why this race is so tough. Cleveland's Chris Lax clocked an outstanding 10hours 20min 46sec to finish in the top in the 40-44years age group and gain a qualifying spot for the World Championship's at Ironman Hawaii. Total Racing's Eliott Gowland smashed his target time of 11 hours when finishing in 10hours 26min 22sec in the 35-39yrs age group whilst Hartlepool's Gary Wilson clocked 11hours 41min 48sec and One Life's Barry Eastham 13 hours 05min 50sec in the same age group.
Little Beaver (World Championship Qualifier) 23/05/09
Based in the grounds of Belvoir Castle in Leicestershire, the Little Beaver Olympic Distance Triathlon was a qualifying event for this year's World Age Group Triathlon Championships in Australia so a lot was at stake and tensions were high. One Life Racing's Alan Copland was the highest finisher, 1st in his age group (35-39yrs) and 4th overall in a swift 1.59.22 which has guaranteed his qualification for the World's. Ian Goulson (Tyne Tri) finished 13th in the same age group (2.15.13). David Barker (Total Racing Int) finished 19th in the 30-34 years category in 2.15.01 whilst team mate Jonathon Robson was 11th in the 20-24yrs race (2.23.05). Kath Blakey (Cleveland Tri Club) in the women's 45-49yrs age group was 5th in 2.37.08 whilst club-mate Anna Hatton (Cleveland Tri Club) in 25-29yrs age group was 18th (2.44.49).
Wetherby Olympic Distance Triathlon 24/05/09
Georgie Rutherford was an emphatic winner of the women's event at the Wetherby Olympic distance triathlon in 2.17.28. The North East's regional development officer lead from start to finish putting time into her rivals on each discipline. Jo Short (Durham Tri) added to the North East's success claiming 3rd placed female in 2.28.55. Lucy Follet (Ryton Tri) was 6th in 2.37.49. Ryton Tri also had Philip Addyman, 24th in the men's event in 2.16.58 and Richard Follett, 47th in 2.24.37. Sun City Triathlete Huw Fryer was 37th in 2.20.52.
National Sprint Triathlon Championships 7/6/09
Congratulations to Cleveland Triathlete, Michael Dunne, winner of the 55-59yrs age group at this years National Sprint Triathlon championships at Emberton Country Park, Milton Keynes. Dunne's time of 1.08.38 was over five minutes faster than his nearest challenger. One Life Racing had James Dickinson, 8th in the 50-54yrs age group in 1.13.03 whilst in the women's race Anna Turvey of Heaton Harriers was 5th in the 25-29yrs age group in 1.16.18. In the same age group, Tyne Triathlete's Emma Cox (1.22.26) and Joanna Clarke (1.29.15) finished in 13th and 14th respectively.
Blenheim Triathlon (Youth Girls) 7/06/09
Maddie Winzer from Richmond, racing in the Youth Girls elite super sprint event finished 2nd behind Sky Draper. This was a good result for the National Youth Duathlon Champion as it qualifies her to represent Great Britain at European Youth Relay team championships in Holten, Holland next month.
Coniston Standard and Old Man Middle Distance Triathlons 07/06/09
In this seriously tough event, the North East had some very good success. In the Standard event, Sarah Smith of Tri@Teasdale CRC finished in 3rd female overall in 2.52.35. Lucy Follett of Ryton Tri was 5th (2.56.33). Alnwick Triathlete, Bridget Peberdey won the F50 category in 3.21.36. Richard Follett of Ryton Tri was 6th overall male in 2.26.59. In the Old Man middle distance event, Ryton Tri had two athletes in the top three. Gareth Huxley finished 2nd in 5.45.50 with Philip Addyman, 3rd in 5.46.17. Less that two minutes separated the first three athletes.
