Sun City Triathlon Club

Sun City Tri was formed in the early 1990s and are a group of triathletes based at the Newcastle Road Swimming baths in Sunderland - although they’ll call the 50m pool at Stadium Park “home” from 2008. The club caters for absolutely everyone from people looking to get fitter and get started in triathlon through to world championship medal winners and you’ll find a complete cross-section of abilities at club training sessions. They’re genuinely proud that they’ve fielded the first and last placed finishers at several local races in the past! Sun City Triathletes compete in tri-, du- and aquathlons and at all distances from super sprint through to the 140.6 miles of an Ironman, so there’s plenty of race experience to draw on within the club.

With two BTF level 2 and three BTF level 1 coaches, plus having STAR mark accreditation and Triathlon England affiliation, the club is in a great position to help athletes get what they want out of triathlon. They can offer everything from structured training plans to nutritional advice to training partners. By swimming alongside the City of Sunderland Amateur Swimming Club, Sun City Tri have access to a range of coached and uncoached swimming sessions including some led by top international coaches. The main sessions are on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 7.30 to 8.30pm at Newcastle Road baths and this is the best time to go along and meet the club. Thursdays tend to be a bit less hectic if you want a quieter introduction! They also organise Sunday bike rides from Herrington Country Park and co-ordinate run training sessions between members.

The club organises the popular Sun City Triathlon which won the title “North-East Race of the Year” in both 2005 and 2006 (thanks to the votes of North-East triathletes) and which acted as the North-East Regional Sprint Distance Championships in 2006 and will do so again in 2007. In addition, Sun City Tri organise the Monkwearmouth Triathlon and the Washington Aquathlon, two races in the regional children’s triathlon series.
