15/01/2004 - Regional Committee Meeting
NORTH EAST REGION COMMITTEE MEETING15th January 2004
Minutes
Present - Jem Lawson, Sam Haddock, Peter Craggs, Nigel Ellam, Jen Milsom, Sandra Main.
1. The One Stop Plan – future implications. Triathlon is now one of the top ten priority sports reporting to the sports cabinet. The BTA have to create a four-year plan from 2005 – 2009. By November 2004 draft plans have to go to Sports UK. This will mean more responsibility for the regions. Each region will aspire to have a Sports Development Officer; Sports UK will create the framework needed to deliver the corporate strategy. A National Coaching Certificate is being developed with the government providing the money. Eventually the regions should have their own coaches.
2. Regional Website – It was agreed that it would be useful for John Howells to become a member of the committee. The committee all looked at the website and agreed that it was excellent. It was suggested that each club could either have their own page or a link to their club website.
3. Regional Sanctioning Officer – Changing Status. - It was decided by the BTA that there was too much responsibility in this role for one person so things have been changed this year. The race organiser must send his Risk Assessment directly to the BTA at least three months before their event and the BTA will be the sanctioning body. It has been suggested that the regional officer will still look at Risk assessments, offer advice and possibly be a mentor for new race organisers, also to manage the regional pool of referees and officials. The agreed new title for this role is to be ‘Regional Sanction Adviser’.
4. Coaching Courses & Officials Courses – Jen and Nigel are compiling a list of people in the region who are interested in taking Level 1 and Level 2 coaching courses. Nigel has suggested applying for lottery funding to help with the high costs with some help from Damien. Possibly something could be organised by April. Also we could do with a few more referees in the region.
5. 2004 Events – Regional Grand Prix – Last year all the regional events were over subscribed so it made it difficult to compete in six events. It was decided that in 2004 to make it four events in total, one of which could be a duathlon. Meadowfield and Stokesley Duathlon will be included in the list of regional events. The Regional Championship events will be Weardale and Prince Bishops again this year and these events will not be included in the Grand Prix Series. The Regional Presentation evening is booked for Saturday 16th October at Durham Cricket Club the same venue as last year. Children & Youths – Nigel has sent out a newsletter with an option to respond for those wishing to continue. The North East Children’s Triathlon Series still need a chairman and possibly a treasurer. It is hoped to run 8 events locally and we could still do with a sprint event. Three events to count in the Regional series, two of which must be triathlons. Jen looking at possible venues for a bike / run training day.
6. Officers Reports – None
7. Future Meetings – Committee Meeting – Tuesday March 16th at 6pm Newcastle Road swimming baths Sunderland with an option to swim afterwards. AGM – 2nd May 2004 Venue Acklam Sports Centre after Cleveland Sprint. We need to fill the positions of Chairman and Secretary.
8. Thanks - were given to Jen and Peter for their excellent hospitality.
